Listening Is Our Strategy: How the Power of Partnership Begins with the Power of Listening  | Issue #25

At Core Clinical Partners, we talk a lot about partnership. But for us, that word means something more than shared goals or aligned incentives. It means starting every relationship with curiosity and building every solution by listening first.

Too often in healthcare, the default is to walk in with a playbook. “Here’s what worked at the last site,” they’ll say. “Let’s try that here.”

But hospitals aren’t copy-and-paste operations. They are dynamic systems made up of people, pressures, and priorities. What works in South Georgia might fall flat in the Midwest. The needs of a community hospital can’t be met with a strategy designed for an academic medical center. 

That’s why we don’t lead with answers and a cookie-cutter model. We lead with questions.

We ask. We analyze. We listen, because the people already doing the work often know exactly where the gaps are.

What Listening Actually Looks Like 

Listening isn’t a buzzword at Core, it’s a discipline.

When we enter a new partnership, we don’t begin with implementation. We start with first principle thinking: 

  • Why is patient flow breaking down?  And where? 
  • Are there avoidable delays in discharge or admission? And why? 
  • What do clinicians need to do their jobs better? 
  • Is patient experience suffering because of workflow—or because the team isn’t working as a team? 

This isn’t a theoretical exercise. We go on-site. We round. We observe huddles. We sit down with the clinicians, the nurses, the leaders, and the staff who keep the system running day in and day out. We ask questions that get to the root of operational and clinical performance, and then we design strategies based on what we learn. 

That’s not a soft skill. That’s a strategic one.  

And when we listen, the results speak for themselves. 

Real Listening, Real Results 

At a Southeastern partner hospital, our engagement began the same way every one of our partnerships do–with listening. Their leadership didn’t need a generic Emergency Department (ED) throughput solution. They needed a partner who could understand the bottlenecks unique to their hospital: staffing instability, inconsistent leadership, and long door-to-provider times that were driving up LWBS and frustrating patients.

Instead of forcing a model, we took time to understand their process and worked collaboratively to build something that would work in their environment. The result?

  • LWBS down from 8.8% to 2.0% and continuing to drop month over month 
  • Hundreds more patients receiving timely care each month 
  • Over $3.5 million in new annual hospital revenue and much more than that in community perception. 

At another partner site in the Midwest, it wasn’t just about the data, it was about the culture. There was no shortage of effort. What they needed was alignment: a partner to listen to frustrations, identify gaps in communication, and help rebuild trust across teams. Today, their Hospital Medicine program is more cohesive, more collaborative, and better equipped to serve patients, because we started by listening.

These stories aren’t outliers. They’re our operating model.

When we talk about The Power of Partnership, we don’t mean surface-level alignment. We mean real, ongoing collaboration built on understanding.

True partnership means co-creating solutions with the clinicians and leaders closest to the challenge. It means staying engaged, staying flexible, and staying accountable to the people doing the work.

Every one of our hospital partners is better off, not because we brought them a blueprint, but because we started with the right questions.

Listening isn’t the first step. It’s the foundation. And it’s how we’ll continue to build trust, deliver results, and live up to the promise in our name.
